Large Scale Oyster Recovery Projects

Since 2000 the Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP) has planted over 2.2 billion disease free spat on shell oysters that were produced at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Horn Point Laboratory. Currently there are nearly 1,300 acres of oyster bars under management. A majority of the oysters we plant are placed on oyster sanctuaries and managed reserves bars and on occasion on harvest bars, aquaculture test areas and educational displays. Learn more about the program.

Community Based Oyster Projects

In 2008, we partnered with the State of Maryland and other partners in creating the Maryland Grow Oysters Initative in the Tred Avon River. In 2009, the program expanded to an additional 11 areas. We were awarded a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation as a partner in the expansion of the Marylanders Grow Oysters initiative and are providing the logistics in delivering the oyster cages to the various sites including the Nanticoke River.

Chesapeake Bay Recovery Projects

In 2005, the Chesapeake Bay Recovery Partnership (CBRP) was formed between the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Oyster Recovery Partnership. Its goals are to raise monies from both the private and public sectors in order to provide funding for large-scale bay restoration projects and to cause those projects to be implemented.

The first major project was the Corsica River targeted restoration project. Learn more.
