📖 This is Part 3 - Research and Development Initiatives - of our series on Alternate Substrate for Oyster Restoration ORP is leading research initiatives to support the state of Maryland’s efforts to explore alternate substrates for oyster production. In collaboration with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (@umces_hpl) , we conducted a pilot study to assess spat setting efficiency in the hatchery on a variety of materials including clam shells, granite, and river rock. In collaboration with Maryland Department of Natural Resources (@marylanddnr) and the Maryland County Oyster and Shell Committees, we conducted in-water pilot deployments of recycled concrete. The results of these pilot studies will be crucial in identifying sustainable, effective and cost-efficient solutions for all stakeholders. The future of oyster restoration is a team effort!
